Building Your Home Office: Five Things to Make Sure You Have

FrugalfulOctober 29, 2013

Today, many people are discovering the benefits of working out of a home office. In addition to eliminating that morning commute, a home office can also be a more cost-effective option for small businesses and start ups. Whether you are starting a business or working out of your home a few days a week, here are the five things you will need to keep your business operations running smoothly.

Efficient Computer
For casual use, an outdated computer may have been fine. However, now that you are working from home you will need to make sure that your computer is up to the task. Double check that your computer has enough memory to keep up with your storage needs and consider an upgrade if it does not meet the criteria. Then, be sure to use an external hard drive to back up any vital documents.

Ergonomic Workstation
After building your home office, you can count on spending many hours sitting at your desk while you accomplish your daily tasks. Be sure to invest in an ergonomic desk that keeps your posture in the correct alignment to ward off back, wrist and neck pain. Because this will be your own office, this is one area where you can explore what works best for you such as a standing desk or one that is set to your specific height.

Comfortable Seating
Next to your desk, your work chair will play a vital role in your comfort throughout the workday. Look for a chair that is ergonomically designed to provide the right support for your back and arms. To find the perfect chair, you may need to spend some time sitting in a few to determine what feels best, but it will be worth it when your productivity is increased.

Printer and Ink
Although many documents are sent through wireless communications, it will still be necessary to print important documents for recordkeeping and correspondence purposes. In fact, those who are setting up a home office for the first time are often surprised by how much they use their printer. Consider investing in a quality printer with scanning and copying capabilities, in addition to normal printing abilities.Be sure to also stock up on the ink you need for your business. You will want to make sure you choose the correct ink for your particular printer, said an expert from Cartridge Ink UK.

Storage and Filing System
Depending upon your business, you may need shelving units installed, or you may be able to get away with a small filing system. If you have sensitive information to be filed, be sure to save it in a lockable cabinet. Additionally, a fireproof safe can keep valuable documents preserved in the case of a disaster.

Taking the time to set up your home office in a way that best suits your work style and business will result in increased productivity that will help to grow your business. By including an efficient computer, printer and ergonomically correct workspace in your office, you will be ready to get to work while enjoying the comforts of home.
