5 Repairs and Projects for the Summer Months

webmasterJune 5, 2013

Unless you live in an area with year-round good weather, the summer months will likely be the best time for you to tackle your various home repair projects. In order to make the most of this window of time, consider these tips to help you get started.

  • 1. Focus on big outdoor projects first

Think about your weather during the summer months. In many areas, you can count on favorable conditions for only a specific span of months. This is a good time to concentrate on outdoor projects such as refinishing decks, stripping paint or roof repair. Re-painting the exterior of your home is often only possible during a stretch of time that you can depend on more moderate weather.

  • 2. Plan and plant landscaping

Late spring and summer are usually the best time to plant flower beds or gardens. This is also the best time to take on larger-scale landscaping projects. If you find certain areas of your yard or deck aren’t used during the scorching heat of summer, plan and execute the addition of shade trees or shrubs. This is also true when considering landscaping plans that will give you additional privacy from neighbors.

  • 3. Don’t forget your windows

Remember that your windows offer the best lighting for the interior of your house, that is, natural lighting. The summer months are a perfect time to clean off the dirt and grime that can build up on your exterior panes during the year. This is also a good opportunity to check for any cracks or leaks.

  • 4. Check your gutters

After the run-off of snow and rain from spring showers, your gutters are likely full of leaves, twigs and other debris. If you plan to clean out your gutters every summer they will function more effectively during inclement weather.

  • 5. Repair cement or asphalt

Fixing cracks and repaving asphalt requires time to dry. The summer months are the time to focus on your driveway, walkways or steps you have surrounding your home. Snow and ice can wreak havoc on these surfaces. Fixing cracks when they appear will help you avoid increased damage to these areas.

With a plan in place, you can tackle some of these projects while still creating time to enjoy the summer months. When you keep up with these projects on a yearly basis they will be easier to complete and help you escape more expensive repairs in the future.
