5 Frugal Items Every Home Should Not Be Without

FrugalfulOctober 22, 2013

Saving money can seem like an overwhelming task. You may be unprepared for the temptation that you feel at first to spend money on frivolous things. Here are five items to keep in your home to help you in your mission to save.

  • 1. Energy Star Appliances

Everybody is talking about how energy efficiency starts in the home. Buying energy star appliances is a great way to drastically reduce your energy bill. It is estimated that 20-30% less energy used with energy star products which means you are saving green in more ways than one! There is no reason you can’t save money while you can save the environment.

  • 2. Crock Pot

Eating out is expensive, but sometimes busy families just don’t have time to cook in the evenings. Even if you are busy, saving money means staying away from restaurants, fast food, and the pizza guy. Crock pots are great because you can prepare your meal when the kids go to bed, set it in the morning, and let it cook while you’re at work. The bonus is crock pot meals usually require little preparation, so when you get home, dinner is waiting.

  • 3. Tools for Small Home Repairs

You may not be considered “handy” when it comes to home repairs, but you can probably do more than you think. Repairing a patch of drywall, tightening a pipe, or painting the deck are things you can more than likely do for yourself. Buy a set of the basic tools and keep them accessible. Use home repair books or the internet to search for articles and videos to gain confidence. Instead of calling a repair company, try these small repairs that aren’t dangerous on your own.

  • 4. Board Games

Boredom is one of the main reasons people spend money. It can be tempting to go out with friends for a night on the town every weekend or take the kids to the zoo when they start complaining about being bored. This will not be good for your pocketbook. While you are trying to pinch the pennies, stay home with family or friends instead. Keep board games and playing cards available for entertainment. You will be surprised at how much fun you can have right in the comfort of your own home.

  • 5. Home Security System

You work hard for your home and your possessions. Being burglarized does not only cost you financially, but it is also emotionally taxing. This can lead to emotional overspending as well. In cities like Clarksville home security is important for the protection of your family and home. Consider a reliable company like Vivint in Round Rock TX for your home security system.

It is easy to get off your spending diet. Don’t go into it unprepared. Be sure to invest in these five things. They will definitely pay off in the long run.
