Tips to Prepare Your Home for Fall Renovations

webmasterSeptember 4, 2013

Fall is one of the best seasons for home renovation. The weather is drier and more cool, making it an ideal time to conduct extensive renovation projects. When you are looking for that perfect design for your home don’t forget about practical matters. Before you begin, here are some ways you can prepare for renovations in the fall.

  • Decide Between Cosmetic Changes or An Entire Overhaul

The first question you should ask yourself is whether you want to make some small changes or a long-term change that will significantly impact the value and livability of your home. If you are making small changes look to see if it is something you can do yourself. If you are making larger changes, plan ahead, and consider how long it will take, as well as the financing options available. Taking out short term loans in San Antonio may be the perfect way to get extra cash and provide a cushion for a long-term investment. Do not pick materials and tools that are not upgraded to the best possible option. Decide on a layout that will work best with your current home look before sinking the money into an inefficient design.

  • Know How Long You Plan to Stay in Your Current Home

Some renovations do not sell well with a house. If you are planning to move out of your house within the next 3-7 years, you may want to consider renovations that add value and make your house more easily sell-able. Painting, for example, is a cheap way to add value to your home, but bright and exotic colors may not sell well. Consider neutral colors. If you have young children and want to add a basketball court, backyard pool, or built-in playground, consider how a potential buyer of your house would see these additions. If you are in it for the long-haul consider getting the most durable products and investing in appliances you plan to use for a long time.

  • Allow Yourself Time to Complete the Project

The cost of renovating your home is not only in the value of materials purchased from the home improvement store, but also in the amount of time you put forth working on the project. Is your project worth 200 hours of your time? Try doing small parts of a larger project to get a feel for how long it will take you, and how intensive it will be. You may discover you need help carrying out larger renovations.

Use these tips to help you choose a suitable renovation project. You need only the money and time you are willing to spend to get all the work done. In the long run of your home, these projects can potentially serve you for years. Start planning now to get them all done before winter hits.
