The Perfect DIY Group and Couple Costumes

webmasterOctober 22, 2011
Halloween is right around the corner, and I don’t know about you, but I start thinking about my costume for the next year on November 1. No time to waste, right? We all know it’s no fun to be at a party and have the same costume as at least five other people. Besides, Halloween is a day for creativity, not conformity. From past experience, I’ve found that store-bought costumes just don’t do the trick. Growing up, my grandma would always sew all of our costumes, so we’d always be unique. Now that I’m all grown up (and I guess I’m too old to ask my grandmother to sew a costume for me), I’ve found new ways to get costume creative, and you can too!

Need any help? Here are some great costume ideas for couples and groups, because it’s always more fun to dress up with other people:

1. Beauty and the Geek

This is a really fun couples idea and allows for creativity on both sides. The guy dresses like a nerd, complete with taped glasses, suspenders, and a Rubik’s cube. The girl dresses glamorously in the fanciest dress she can find, heels, purse, etc. It’s also funny if the boy dresses as the “beauty” and the girl is the “geek.”
2. Fanta Girls
The Spice Girls are old news, and it’s time to think outside of the box when it comes to girl group costumes. For a sassy group of girls, wear an orange, purple, red, or yellow mini-skirt and a tank top (different color for each girl). You can wear a wide white belt or a white ribbon, and a headband the color of your outfit. The look can be completed with go-go boots or knee high socks and a pair of white heels.
3. The Weasley Family
Who doesn’t want to be the coolest red-headed family for Halloween? You don’t want to spend a lot of money on a costume you’ll only wear once, so get some hand-me-down clothes; besides, that’s what the Weasleys would do. If you aren’t a redhead, consider a wig or temporary dye. Wear a maroon oversized sweater over a white button-up shirt. The initial can be an iron-on letter or taped on with yellow tape. Wear some dress pants and dark shoes with dress socks, and carry a wand.
4. Mario and Luigi
Another fun couple’s costume takes retro video games to a whole new level. All you need is a red shirt, red hat, green shirt, green hat, and some suspenders. Place an “M” and “L” to the front of your hats with white tape. You can go all out with white gloves, mustaches, and work boots if you want. Warning: You both might have the Mario theme song stuck in your head for the rest of the night.
5. Old Couple
Break out those canes, bow ties, reading glasses, walkers with tennis balls on the ends, grandma sweaters, brooches, and anything else you can think of to dress as an old person. This costume idea leaves a lot of room for creativity, and you can really get into character. False teeth, anybody?
Those are just five suggestions, but really, your options are endless! Get creative, have fun, and be safe this Halloween. For more costume ideas for couples, groups, or even for on your own, see this amazing and very creative DIY costume guide. Happy Halloween!
